Big Enough That They Stop Going Back to the Sofa.
Most wall scratchers are the size of a placemat. A cat mid-stretch is longer than that, so they use it, run out of room, and finish the job on your armchair. This one is nearly a metre wide. There is nowhere left to run out to.
Cats stretch when they scratch. A short mat sends them back to the couch.
This is the single most common reason a scratcher gets ignored. Scratching is not a claw activity, it is a whole-body one — back feet planted, spine extended, front paws reaching as far up as they go. A small panel interrupts that halfway through.
At 50 × 80 cm there is room for the full motion, and room for two cats to use it at once without negotiating.
Dense felt, not cardboard.
Cardboard scratchers shed confetti across your floor every single day they are in use. Compressed felt holds together far better than that — and it is quieter than sisal, which matters if the scratching spot is anywhere near where you sleep.
It reads as wall art, not pet gear
A cat tower announces itself from the doorway. This is cut to the outline of the illustration — no rectangle, no border, no beige carpet — in flat reds, creams and yellows. Guests read it as a graphic panel someone chose on purpose.
Which is the actual reason it stays up. A scratcher that gets hidden before company arrives is a scratcher your cat cannot use.
Zero floor space
A tower eats a corner of the room. This uses wall you were not using anyway — which matters in an apartment, and matters more if you already own more cat furniture than you would like to admit.
Where to put it (this decides whether it works)
Mount it over the spot they already scratch, not where you would prefer it to go. Cats return to territory they have already marked — you are redirecting a habit, not starting one.
Height matters. The bottom edge should sit low enough that your cat can reach the top while standing on their back legs. Too high and they will ignore it. With a panel this size, low and wide beats high and narrow.
The other reliable spot is beside where they sleep. Cats stretch and scratch within about a minute of waking — put it in arm’s reach of the nap spot and you will usually get a taker on day one.

Three honest notes
Felt sheds a little. Not the way cardboard does — no confetti, nothing to sweep daily — but a determined cat will work small fibres loose over the months. If you want a surface that stays completely intact, woven sisal is the tougher choice.
Some cats ignore a new scratcher for a week. That’s normal. Placement fixes it more often than the product does — see the section above before you give up on it.
On walls: adhesive mounting holds best on smooth, sealed surfaces — painted drywall, tile, finished wood. It will not hold reliably on textured, freshly painted or wallpapered walls. If you rent, test a corner on a hidden patch first and remove it slowly, at an angle.
Save the sofa.
They are going to stretch and scratch something today regardless. Pick the apple and give them somewhere better than your armchair.
